Thoughts on President Obama

A few deep thoughts on this historic day.

I am happy for people of color where ever they may be.  This man represents so much to them, that I cannot even imagine the euphoria they are feeling, especially those that came of age in the era of MLK and earlier.

Young blacks have had it mild by comparison.  That does not mean to say that they have not known discrimination or marginalization.

I wonder, however, whether the tremendous level of support we witnessed today will be able to be sustained once President Obama governs from the center, as I have envisioned all along.  Will they be happy “just to be at the party” rather than actually try to turn back the wrongs of past generations against our generation, and that of our children?  This remains to be seen.

We have had white Presidents all of our lives.  Some we liked, some we didn’t.  Surely blacks will not support Obama going forward just because he’s black.  It will be interesting to see who steps out first.  Four years can be a long time.

All of that being said, I have to be honest with you.  All of why I supported this man from the beginning is still viable today.  He represents so much to so many.  We can correct the course this country is on, and I still believe he can be the man to do it.  I can only hope that Congress steps aside to some degree to let the man govern.

My last thought is simply how great this country of ours is.

  1. I concur. You’ve said it very well.
Incidentally, the benediction (not the invocation) was to me the very best part of all that was said during the entire inauguration ceremonies.
