having been ruminating this question over the course of the day really emphasizes in my mind the enormous contribution of george martin to the beatles catalogue. the white album certainly foreshadows the solo careers that would come: lennon’s genius but often unpolished and uneven output; mccartney’s brilliant command of popular idioms but at the expense of emotional debth at times; george’s full blossom of pent-up output.

sgt pepper was martin’s tour de force as much as the song writers while “the beatles” was lennon/mccartney reclaming their band.

    I could not agree more.

I have always felt that Martin let the band do what it wanted with the white album. Therefore, in order to whittle it down, the track list must include snippets from each artist.

i will run through my list (i will stick to 15) in a bit, but for now and at first blush I would say the following four are no-brainers.

    Yer Blues – Lennon
Back in the U.S.S.R. – McCartney
Don’t Pass Me By – Starkey
While My Guitar Gently Weeps – Harrison

    back in the ussr
    dear prud
    while my guitar
    mother natures son
    why don’t we do it
    i will
    julia

    revolution 1
    blackbird
    :long:
    birthday
    cry baby cry
    helter skelter
    i’m soooo tired

    yer blues = brilliant mistake
    glass onion = self indulgent
don’t pass me by = wouldn’t have made a solo ringo album
rocky, bungalo, honey pie, me & my monkey – nope, nope, nope, nope

not to sound like biden talking about mccain but…
this may be my favorite album of all time and it has some shiite on it that would never get listened to outside the context of this album; IN the context of the album it is genius.

hard to argue really with much of anything on your list.

still think ringo would be represented
