Lights Out in Sylvania.
The Toledo Blade reported yesterday that the city council of Sylvania voted to restrict lighting on businesses that face residences. The move was prompted by Promedica, a health insurance conglomerate, and its desire to make its hospitals look like casinos. I am no zoning/building code expert, but it seems to me that the government ought [...]
Tell Them, “Hell No.”
View Larger Map Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. CVS Pharmacy is allegedly planning to demolish the two existing structures at the southeast corner of Monroe St and Douglas Rd in order to construct a 13,000+ square foot pharmacy. The Final Cut
Mary over at the blog Are You On The Fence? has a terrific review of the steak and seafood restaurant inside the recently opened Hollywood Casino in Rossford. As a devotee of steak, I read the review with great interest, only to be slightly disappointed in the restaurant. When a upscale restaurant makes everything a [...]
Metroparks Need To Define “Maintenance”
There is a report in today's Blade that the Metroparks Board is seeking additional money through a second levy which will be placed on the ballot in November. The Metroparks already has a 1.4-mill operating levy, which also runs 10 years. It was replaced in 2007 and generates about $10.8 million a year for general [...]
Toledo is Manly.
Toledo ranks high on this list of America’s manliest cities I think in large part for two very good reasons. First, its proximity to the Great Lakes and second the presence of two large retailers, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s. Regardless, it is nice to see Toledo rated highly in at least some regard.
RIP: Roman Griswold
Remember those days hanging out at the OT, watching The Griswolds belt out blues? I sure do. Roman Griswold, founding member and piano player (I refuse to call him a pianist), died this week at the age of 75. Cancer claims another.
Why Cooperate When They Can Compete?
There is currently a war going on in our fair city in the most unlikeliest of places. You see metro Toledo currently has an amazing six Catholic high schools in the midst of rapidly increasing education costs and a rapidly declining school-age population. Four of the schools are devoted to a single sex environment, two are [...]
Most Miserable Magazine: Forbes
I guess I never really paid attention to the things that Forbes magazine publishes until they published that outrageous list of worst cities in which to work that had nothing to do with the actual city in which the person was working.** The latest list is the country’s most miserable cities. Here’s how the magazine [...]
Show Me The Money.
Image via Wikipedia The Blade jumps on Wood County editorially today, bashing the commission for neglecting to even let the voters decide if they want to extend the amount they are currently overtaxed for shit they don’t use or need. In a typical year, the number of Wood County residents who visit the zoo equals [...]
A No Brainer
Image via Wikipedia The Wood County commission rejected a proposal by the Toledo Zoo to place a property tax levy on the Wood County ballot this fall. The commission agreed that the Zoo is a regional asset but listened to the constituency, which overwhelmingly told the commission they did not want the levy on the [...]
